What’s a tapered bushing?
Tapered bushings support the operation of heavy machinery by attaching to shafts. Also called taper bushings, they have diameters that gradually decrease. This reduces friction between two surfaces.
Tapered bushings are typically cylinders, and the tapered area can be internal or external. If the bushing is tapered on the inside, it has an internal taper. Bushings with tapers on the outside have external tapers.
Tapered bushings come in one-piece and split styles. A split taper bushing is composed of two or more pieces mated together when put into service. Split tapered bushings alleviate the need to have a component bored to size, ideally lowering handling challenges and allowing for shaft size changes if necessary.
